Bodegas Mauro arrives in Rioja with Baynos

The Bodegas Mauro Rioja winery is located in Baños de Ebro. Fourth project of the García family, after Bodegas Mauro (in Tudela de Duero since 1978), San Román Bodegas y Viñedos (founded in 1997 under the Toro Designation of Origin) and Garmón Continental (in the heart of Ribera del Duero since 2014).

Baños de Ebro is located in the south of the province of Álava, within the Rioja Alavesa wine region. The municipality limits to the north with Samaniego and Villabuena de Álava, to the east with Elciego, to the west with the Riojan municipality of San Vicente de la Sonsierra and to the south the course of the Ebro separates it from the Riojan municipality of Torremontalbo.

Located at an altitude of 421 meters, Baños de Ebro is delimited by the foot of the Sierra Cantabria to the north and by the left bank of the Ebro River to the south.

The Bodegas Mauro vineyard in La Rioja is located in Baños de Ebro and is arranged in smallholdings, six hectares spread over nine small plots with different varieties: Viura, Tempranillo and Graciano.

The glass vines have an average age between 40 and 100 years and sit on poor soils with a calcareous clay composition. Average yields are 3,500 kg/ha.

The cultivation of the vineyard is ecological with biodynamic practices, and the use of animal traction for work in the vineyard.

The winery is located in the center of Baños de Ebro, an imposing traditional three-story stone house that has been restored, where all the wine movements are carried out by gravity, and drilled with a network of underground cellars, some of them from medieval times. It is located in a traditional winery neighborhood that was an ancient Roman necropolis. A vestige of that past is the funerary plaque found in the cellar and which is dated between the 2nd and 5th centuries.

From its first vintage (2020), 11,561 bottles of Baynos Tinto (tempranillo and garnacha) and 2,882 bottles of Baynos Blanco (viura) have been produced.
